TeksKennels Training Page
TeksKennels is located on 172 acres of native grasses which is home to various wild life including coveys of bobwhite quail. We have a 25 dog covered facility with a fenced in dog proof run. My training period for the public is between March - October and I prefer the dogs be around 7 - 9 months of age. During the months of November - February I operate my wild quail outfitting business and I provide the opportunity for finished dogs to run in my guide string.
Occasionally I will be asked to train a puppy and enhance their prey drive and other natural hunting abilities when they are under 7 months of age.
My training program uses both quail and pigeons. I begin with training the dogs on a check cord with pigeons through the flush where they get conditioned with the gun. I move to quail when they are steady to wing and pop with pigeons. Training the dogs through this process generally takes 6 - 8 weeks. We always encourage natural retrieving, but will force break the dog to retrieve if necessary once they are over a year old and have some hunting experience. Force breaking generally take 6 - 8 weeks as well.
Just because a dog is broke does not necessarily mean they know how to hunt wild birds. They need extensive hunting practice to enhance their hunting abilities. This is why I also take in broke dogs for a month at a time during hunting season and teach them to hunt wild birds. This is done through my guide string where they learn to hunt with experienced dogs.
Formal Training - $175 / week
Force Breaking - $1200 flat rate
Wild Bird Training - $500 / month
